What's Project Eddy?

Mission Statement

Background to Project Eddy

On 12 February 2013, an 8 ½ year old Jack Russell named Eddy (pictured above, happily sun-bathing) died from accidentally ingesting the sugar substitute xylitol.  His death was not peaceful; it was traumatic and gory... and unnecessary.

Eddy’s legacy is Project Eddy, founded in his memory on 15 February 2013 to educate pet-owners on the danger of xylitol to their pets and to request responsible and prominent labelling on all xylitol products to allow the public to make an informed decision in order to safeguard their pets.  Ignorance as well as xylitol killed Eddy.

What can we do?

We are not against xylitol; it is beneficial for humans.

However, tiny amounts can be fatal to pets, especially dogs, alarmingly quickly.
Even a few milligrams of xylitol can kill a dog within 20 minutes.  If the pet lives rurally and without access to an emergency vet - as was the case for Eddy - they stand little chance of surviving.

Please support our cause in any way you can.  The following pages will detail the Project Eddy campaign.  Ideas and advice are most welcome.  Help us to save our pets from a dreadful illness or death.

To get this message out quickly, please like and SHARE with as many people as possible Eddy's Facebook page.

Happier times

Ed died before his time; he was still young by Jack Russell standards and had never been ill before.  His death will not be in vain.

Did you know that some pet products contain xylitol? Even some specifically designed for dogs! Incredible, we know - especially when the American Animal Poison Control Center is issuing strong warnings about xylitol. Manufacturers of these pet products insist that, if the dosage (depending upon size of dog) is strictly adhered to and isn't accessible to other pets, then it's perfectly safe. Some of these products are being prescribed by vets. Our view is, why take the risk? There is enough evidence that this ingredient can be toxic to animals.  Surely it's better to use an alternative without xylitol or have the product administered directly by a vet.

Following communication with them, a quote from the hallowed halls of the PDSA:
"We are certainly aware of the dangers of xylitol poisoning to dogs and we do reiterate this message at certain times of year - Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter etc, times when more sweet food is consumed.  If you do a google search for 'PDSA' and 'Xylitiol' you will see some of our press releases and case studies on this subject."

Some products that may contain xylitol

Picture
*  Anything sugar-free or fat-free may contain it
*  Chewing gum
*  Low-fat yoghurt
*  Candy/sweeties
*  Mints
*  Mouthwash
*  Dental lollipops given to children
*  Human toothpaste
*  Some pet products!

Of course, not every brand of these products will contain xylitol.  Sometimes xylitol is hidden in the ingredients under the phrase "sugar alcohols".  Please note that other sugar alcohols such as sorbitol are not known to be toxic to pets.  Look at the ingredients of any products that you use on this list.

Xylitol, children and pets just don't mix!
